New Zealand

Information Plan for the National Environmental Indicators Programme (NEIP), Ministry for the Environment, NZ - Conceptual design of an environmental information management framework required as part of the NEIP, in order to assimilate, manage and disseminate information in an efficient and effective manner. Key features of the framework were identified and addressed and included its technical components as well as the organisational and policy issues associated with the involvement of a large and diverse group of users and stakeholders.

Environmental Management and Decision Support System, Christchurch International Airport, NZ - Integration of over 50 discrete information layers covering environmental resources, airport operations, infrastructure, cadastral and demographic data into a customised GIS system designed to facilitate a range of airport planning, operational, monitoring and maintenance functions.

Antarctica

Metadata Management System Design, British Antarctic Survey (BAS), UK - Development of an Internet system to enable entry, editing, updating and query of all types of data collected by BAS. This tool, constructed using the Oracle database will facilitate management of a vast data resource.

Ross Sea Protected Areas Review, Antarctica - Development of management plans for protected areas in Antarctica for the Governments of Italy, New Zealand and the United States. Involved all stages of consultation with statutory and non-governmental stakeholders, review and summary of scientific data, design and production of digital maps of the sites using GIS.

International Database on Antarctic Tourism -Design of a data collection framework for monitoring of the status of tourism activities in Antarctica. Negotiation and securing agreement internationally and with tour operators a standard format and method for collection of these data. Design and implementation of a computer-based tool (Microsoft Access) for collection of data in digital form.

State of the Antarctic Environment Report, Antarctica - Principal author and coordinator of input to the Report of the UN Secretary General on the State of the Antarctic Environment, tabled at the 51st session of the UN General Assembly. Prepared on behalf of the United Nations Environment Programme, the project involved synthesising the latest scientific results on the state of the Antarctic environment and working with a wide range of international experts and organisations.

Environmental Database for the Dry Valleys, Antarctica - Provision of the New Zealand inputs to an international project to develop an environmental database for the Dry Valley region of Antarctica. A database was constructed to describe topographical, geological, hydrological and glaciological features in the Dry Valleys, based on satellite imagery and aerial photography. Subsequent investigations were made of changes over a 50 year period using image analysis and GIS techniques.

Advice on Data Management Requirements and Resources for the Proposed Biodiversity Institute, Sarawak, Malaysia - Identification of key data management issues and proposal of draft specifications for computer infrastructure and support for the Institute.
